Camden County assists seniors during COVID-19

Meal delivery program currently benefits nearly 2,000 individuals

The Camden County Division of Senior and Disabled Services has expanded its meal delivery program to serve the most vulnerable segment of the population during the COVID-19 pandemic: seniors.

Since April 22, the county has been able to deliver 46,000 meals to nearly 2,000 individual seniors. Camden County Freeholder Jonathan Young says the job of the division was paramount even before the virus shook the world; now, it’s purpose is amplified.

“Our seniors, whether they were enduring this pandemic or not, are our most precious and important constituents in the county,” Young said. “It’s our responsibility to make sure that we take care of every citizen in Camden County … This is something that is a necessity and we want to make sure that no one goes hungry during a time like this.”

Meals have so far been delivered to seniors in 36 municipalities. The effort comprises  approximately two dozen volunteers who have delivered more than 4,000 meals in a single day and over 10,000 in a single week, a record for both categories.

Through the program, seniors receive food on varying schedules, from meals received every day to multiple meals every few days.

According to Young, the program’s meals are donated by various restaurants across Camden County, with help from other vendors and residents.

“As this pandemic drags on, the Department of Health has not missed a step in keeping Camden County seniors from going hungry,” Young noted. “Every weekday since March 18, roughly two dozen delivery drivers have distributed thousands of meals to at-risk residents.

“We continue to be in awe of the commitment shown by the men and women from the Division of Senior Services, Public Works, Parks, Building and Ops and other county employees who are making these deliveries.

“Like other workers on the front lines of this fight, they leave for work every morning to ensure that others can stay home and stay safe,” Young added. “Their service to our community will not be forgotten.”

The program delivers meals to new participants through the Division of Senior and Disabled Services. If you or a senior need meal assistance, call (856) 374-MEAL or (856) 858-3220 to make arrangements and qualify for the program.
