Share the Keys driving orientation set for Feb. 24

The program is free for Washington Township parents and teens to attend.

Washington Township High School will host Share the Keys, a parent/teen safe driving orientation, on Monday, Feb. 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the WTHS Play House (11/12 auditorium). The research-based, data-driven program was developed in partnership with the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety and Kean University and is designed to reduce teen driver crash risks by increasing parental involvement. The program, which is intended ideally for parents and their teens during the pre-permit or permit stage of licensure, is free and will be delivered primarily by WTHS School Resource Officers Tom DiTullio and Tony Leone.

The Share the Keys program helps to foster communication between parents and teens and ensures that all parties fully understand the risks and responsibilities associated with driving and are equipped with the tools needed to build safe driving skills for life, including:

  • Understanding the graduated driver license
  • Being a good role model
  • Effectively enforcing the graduated driver license at home
  • Increasing practice driving hours
  • Controlling the keys

Please note that Washington Township High School juniors, who are current Renaissance Gold Card holders and have secured their driver’s license, will be permitted to purchase a parking permit once they have attended the Share the Keys event. Parking permits for Renaissance Gold Card holders will be available for purchase on a first come, first served basis.

All WTHS juniors who are not Renaissance Gold Card holders will be entered into a lottery for a parking spot only if they have attended a Share the Keys event and have secured their driver’s license.
