In unofficial results from the Gloucester County Board of Elections, Mantua voters rejected two proposals in the school district’s bond referendum on Jan. 28, with provisional and mail-in ballots pending.
The results as of Tuesday night declared that 51.61 percent voted to reject the first proposal and 54.09 voted to reject the second proposal. The bonds would have funded projects at three of the district schools, including replacing a gym floor, adding new kindergarten classrooms and building handicap-accessible bathrooms.
The district responded with a statement on Facebook the next day, saying it was “deeply disappointed” with the results.
“Over the coming weeks, we will take time to reflect and reassess our plans for the future with our key stakeholders. We remain committed to keeping our community informed as we move forward,” said Superintendent Robert Fisicaro in the statement on Wednesday.
School boards may propose a bond issue or special question four more times during the year to pay for school projects. The next date available for a special election is March 10.
