Parks and Rec. has plenty to offer during winter

By Amy Filippone, Dept. of Parks & Recreation

Schools will be on winter break before you know it, and there’s nothing better than spending some time at the Moorestown Recreation Center for fun, games and culinary adventures.

During winter break, on Friday, Dec. 27 from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., students in grades fourth through eighth will make cannolis from scratch. The shell dough is mixed, rolled and fried to a perfect crispy brown. Then, the fresh ricotta cheese and cream filling is made and stuffed into the shells. Crunchy and soft, sweet perfection ready to take home. Chef Katie Sklarow will make this seemingly complex dessert easy to make and remake.

Right before the New Year, Chef Katie will be holding a New Year’s Eve daytime class to prepare for the festivities. Students in fourth through eighth grades will prepare a tray of delicious desserts ready in time for the ball to drop. Mini-cheese cakes and cream puffs will be made from scratch and party-ready. The class is on Tuesday, Dec. 31 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Community Kitchen on the third floor of the Church Street Recreation Center.

On Monday, Jan. 20 and Monday, Feb.17 from 9 a.m. to noon kids in grades two through six will learn how to make breakfast items. The class will prepare a flakey crusted, savory quiche and fluffy, buttery pancakes, all from scratch. Breakfast is delicious any time of day.

Appropriate attire is required for all cooking classes: long pants, closed-toe shoes and hair pulled back. Aprons will be provided. All pantry items like flour and butter are generously donated by Wegmans. Class sizes for all culinary classes are limited so sign up soon.

If your youngster is looking for a little more physical engagement, John Considine will be leading four hours of non-stop fun and activities for grades one through six. There will be two sessions: Jan. 20 and Feb. 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Church Street Recreation Center. Considine is the physical education teacher at South Valley Elementary School. Amongst many other achievements he has been a coach of youth basketball (boys and girls) and a high school tennis coach.

Considine brings enthusiasm and energy to this program and works in some problem-solving games as well as dodge ball, handball, basketball and team games. Children will be grouped by appropriate age levels. In addition to having full use of the gymnasium, kids can utilize the third floor for knock hockey, pool and board games.
