During the latest Harrison Township Committee meeting, the Clearview Girls Field Hockey Team was recognized for winning the 2019 South Group III Sectional Championships and State Championships, a first in the team’s history.
“What you achieved this year is forever going to be in the history books of this town, your home town,” said Mayor Lou Manzo.
He told the girls that when they are older, they will be able to show their kids or grandkids the minutes of the meeting, where their names will appear for being recognized as the first in Clearview Regional High School field hockey history to win a state championship.
Clearview won its first state title, 2-1, on Nov. 9 against Warren Hills Regional School District at Bordentown Regional High School in Bordentown.
Each team member, manager and coach individually received a certificate of recognition from Deputy Mayor Don Heim and Committeewoman Julie Delaurentis.
Varsity Head Coach Brittany Ewan shared a few words about the season.
“I know one of the things that I used to help drive them and to encourage them and to push them was the fact that, yes, we have the potential to make history this season, and we sure did,” said Ewan. “Myself and the coaching staff are so proud of them (the team) and all their hard work, dedication, commitment, that it took to get us to where we are today.”
In other news:
- The committee approved the first reading of an ordinance that would add four corporals positions to the organizational line-up of the police department.
- Committee members approved an amount equal to a 2 percent salary increase every year for the past nine years for the mayor and committee after the township clerk realized members haven’t received an increase in that time, which should have been increased by 2 percent each year. The approval raised the total sum amount of the governing body from $23,075 to $26,491. This would increase the mayor to $6,398 annually and the committee to $5,023 annually, according to the township.
The next committee meeting will be held on Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. at the municipal building courtroom, 114 Bridgeton Pike.
