Township encourages residents to ‘Shop Small’ and support local businesses tomorrow with Small Business Saturday

Evesham Township is encouraging residents to support their local community by supporting local businesses with the 10th annual “Small Business Saturday” on Nov. 30.

Small Business Saturday – held each year on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving – is dedicated to supporting the independent businesses that make communities unique and provide valuable contributions to local economies.

Created in 2010, Small Business Saturday serves as the unofficial kickoff to the holiday shopping season for small businesses across the United States. Last year, consumers in the United States reported spending an estimated $17.8 billion at small businesses on Small Business Saturday, according to the American Express Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey.

Similar studies from American Express have found that an average of $0.67 cents per every dollar spent at America’s small businesses stay in the local community.

Earlier this month, Mayor Jaclyn Veasy and Evesham Township Council joined together to present a proclamation officially designating Nov. 30 as Small Business Saturday in Evesham Township for 2019.

In presenting the proclamation, Veasy said shopping locally creates goodwill within the community by bringing consumers and local entrepreneurs closer together.

“We are fortunate to have so many wonderful small businesses call Evesham their home,” Veasy said. “Small business owners agree that Small Business Saturday helps promote their business and contributes significantly to their holiday sales each year. I, along with Council, am proud to support this initiative as it serves to recognize the diverse range of local business that help create jobs, boost the economy and support local communities.”

Council also used the proclamation to simultaneously recognize the work of the Marlton Business Association (MBA), which is committed to helping its 250 members get more business, while also giving back to Evesham’s local community through funding scholarships and community-based charities.

Representatives of the MBA said shoppers can visit the MBA’s website at www.marltonbusiness.com to see a full list of MBA members.

“Our mission for the Marlton Business Association is to help businesses grow, so we love to support business in Marlton,” MBA President Amy Maricondi said.

Officials not only encourage residents to “Shop Small” on Nov. 30, but officials also ask residents to use their social media accounts to help promote the small businesses that they love using the hashtags #ShopSmall or #SmallBizSat.

Merchants and consumers can learn more about Small Business Saturday and how to get involved by visiting www.shopsmall.com.
