Sun Editorial: It’s time to be thankful

Enjoy your Thanksgiving dinner by avoiding politics

Just because it’s a divisive time in this country doesn’t mean it has to be a divisive time at the Thanksgiving dinner table. According to a WalletHub.com poll, more than 50 percent of people are dreading the prospect of talking politics over their turkey and mashed potatoes.

Who wants a serving of dread alongside their cranberry sauce? There’s an easy solution here, folks. Put the politics aside, and serve up a side dish of thankfulness instead.

Be thankful for the roof over your head, the clothes on your back, and the food on your table. Be thankful for your health and the health of your loved ones.

Be thankful for others – for your family and friends, for emergency personnel, for those serving in the military to protect your freedom and lifestyle.

Be thankful for the big things, but also remember to be thankful for the little things. For having a soft place to lay your head each night, and a hot cup of coffee to savor the next morning. For your favorite football team winning the big game. For your top song playing on the radio on the way to your holiday destination.

There is no shortage of things to be thankful for, and no wrong way to be thankful. Steer the Thanksgiving dinner conversation in the right direction this year – away from political rhetoric and straight to gratitude.

After all, being appreciative of the good things in life should be something we can all agree on.
