Obituary: Elaine Alberts Fanjul

Bellwether for Grace Episcopal Church passes away.

Elaine A. Fanjul died in the predawn hours on Saturday, Nov. 16. All six of her loving daughters had been with her in her last days. She was also expertly and kindly cared for by Compassionate Care Hospice.

Elaine was born in Jersey City, N.J. to Chet and Helen Alberts. Her husband of 60 years, Emilio “Mimi” Louis Fanjul died in June 2008. Theirs was a life-long love affair.

Elaine is survived by her sister, Jane Kasse, also of Haddonfield, her brother, Jim Alberts and his wife Terry of Bay Head, N.J. She is survived by her daughters: Stephanie Fanjul, Christine Wicker, Susie Larcamp (Dan), Beth Sprague (John), Kate Downey (Brian), and Sarah Fanjul (Alex MacMoran) in addition to 17 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 12 nieces and nephews.

Elaine was loving and formidable. Her family was her greatest love and utmost source of amusement, joy and pride. She instilled a sense of community and charity in her children and grandchildren. All those who knew and loved her, will sorely miss her generous spirit, keen wit and sharp intellect.

An active member of Grace Episcopal Church for more than 60 years, Elaine was a co-founder of the Grace Thrift Shop and regular worker up until this past August. She served on the Women’s Board of Cooper Hospital for 25 years in many capacities. A skilled and avid gardener, she spent countless, pleasant hours tending her gardens.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23 at Grace Episcopal Church, 19 Kings Highway East at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held at 10:15 a.m at the church prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Grace Episcopal Church or to the Food Bank of Southern New Jersey.
