Virginia man arrested for unlawful possession of firearms

The following information was provided by the Burlington Township Police Department.

On Sunday, Sept. 29, officers from the Burlington Township Police Department arrested a 21-year-old man from Amherst, Va. for unlawful possession of an assault firearm as well as unlawful possession of a handgun.

The suspect’s arrest was the result of a motor vehicle stop that began at 3:54 a.m. on a silver 2004 Nissan Frontier pickup truck, on Route 541 in the area of Weichert Realty. The man from Virginia was the driver of that vehicle, and, during the stop, officers observed a Bushmaster 5.56 caliber BACR assault rifle loaded with a 30-round large capacity magazine on the rear floor of the vehicle. Once the driver was removed from the vehicle, a subsequent search revealed a black Sig Sauer .380 handgun loaded with hollow point ammunition in the center console of the vehicle.

The man was arrested and subsequently charged with one count each of the following: unlawful possession of an assault rifle, unlawful possession of a handgun, unlawful possession of a rifle/shotgun, unlawful possession of large capacity ammunition magazine and unlawful possession of hollow point ammunition. He was remanded to Burlington County Jail pending his initial court appearance.
