Mayor’s Message: Civil War Living History Weekend and Fall Open House

In this week's Mayor's Message, Mayor Louis Manzo gives a glimpse into the upcoming weekend-long event on Oct. 12 to 13.

We kicked off our slate of events for the Fall season already with our Day of Remembrance ceremony on the evening of Sept. 11 at our memorial site at Church and Main Streets. About 125 residents showed up for the solemn event, which was also attended by our Police and Fire Department members along with American Legion Post 452 members, all in full uniform. It was a beautiful ceremony and you should mark your calendars now to attend next year, if you missed it.

One of the town’s signature events is coming up the weekend of Oct. 12 and 13. The Civil War Living History Weekend and Fall Open House is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. You may have noticed the banners on Main Street. This is an incredible, weekend long event that recreates the battle camps of both the Union and Confederate armies. You can take a step back in time and tour the camps and talk to soldiers in character, some of whom take on the role of a family ancestor who actually fought in the war. Listen, as they recount first-hand stories.

There are battle reenactments, with cannons firing and you can see and learn about the weapons of the day and walk through the camps and medical tents. The event spans the entire length of Main Street from Old Town Hall to the Old Mill. History truly comes alive in this event and it’s a great teaching opportunity to ensure our younger generations understand that period of our nation’s history, its mistakes and the civil war that resulted.

There are tons of fun things to do with the kids including Scarecrow building and games, while Main Street is filled with food trucks offering a wide variety of delicious options. Firetrucks will be on the street too, available for tours, which is always a kid favorite! Farmhouse Design celebrates its 19th year as part of the Mullica Hill family with live music, bonfires, hot cocoa and free pumpkin-painting. And don’t miss the free Lantern Tour of the Union Camp at 7 p.m. on Saturday night at 39 S Main St.

The event is presented by MH Events, LLC and supported by primary local sponsors that include JD Law, US Construction, Farmhouse Design, J&D Paving, Mademoiselle Macaron and Flossy’s. A generous donation is made to the Gar Civil War Museum in Philadelphia with proceeds from the event.

We take great pride in the events staged in Mullica Hill, some sponsored by the township and others with private sponsorship, like this Civil War Living History Weekend and Fall Open House. People come from far and wide to attend, but as residents here, be sure to support our local vendors and get to Main Street at some point that weekend. I hope to see you there.
