Obituary: Claire A. Harden

Former Haddonfield resident, late of Cherry Hill and dedicated to wide variety of athletic pursuits, passes away.

Claire A. Harden of Premier Cadbury in Cherry Hill, formerly a longtime resident of Haddonfield and Westmont, passed away on July 23 at the age of 93. She was the beloved mother of Bobbie Herbs (Michael) of Mt. Laurel, N.J. and Sherrie Knaster (Charles) of Gilbertsville, Pa., loving grandmother of Kayla Herbs, Cara Knaster (Isaak Schaffer) and Krysta Knaster (Jon Morris) and Cherished great grandmother of Charlette and Rose Schaffer, Amelia and Delphine Morris.

Claire was a remarkable athlete, playing field hockey, basketball, tennis and softball at Collingswood High School (class of ’44) and at Temple Univ. (class of ’48). While receiving her Physical Education degree, she continued to play field hockey, basketball and tennis. She taught for 35 years and coached basketball at Holy Cross High School in Riverside, N.J. for 21 years, compiling a record of 235-124, including a championship in 1964. Claire was later inducted into the Collingswood High School athletic Hall of Fame, Temple athletic HOF, South Jersey basketball coaches HOF and Holy Cross HOF for coaching, the South Jersey coaches HOF, West Jersey field hockey HOF for athletics and umpiring, and also the New Jersey basketball coaches HOF. Additionally, she was an honorary umpire for the U.S. Field Hockey Association.

Claire’s Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Haddonfield, 124 Kings Highway East. Greeting immediately following the service. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Claire may be made to American Macular Degeneration Foundation, P.O. Box 515, Northampton, Mass. 01061-0515(www.macular.org).
