Medford Council recognizes Ms. New Jersey Senior America winner, discusses EDC requests

The township presented a proclamation honoring the pageant winner and discussed a request from the Economic Development Commission to add more members.

During the latest Medford Council meeting, the township presented a proclamation honoring Ms. New Jersey Senior America 2019 and discussed a request from the Economic Development Commission to add more members.

Resident Debra Canale won the title of Ms. New Jersey Senior America 2019, a pageant for women who have reached the “age of elegance,” or 60 or better. She was among 11 contestants who participated in the pageant, which dates back to 1971.

The proclamation read that as an accomplished gymnast, Canale impressed both the audience and the judges in the art of pole sport.

She’s begun a year-long journey traveling around the Garden State promoting the positive aspects of aging. She will return to Atlantic City in October to participate in the Senior America Pageant 2019, where she will compete for the national title.

The proclamation, read by Mayor Charles Watson, officially recognized Canale on being crowned Ms. New Jersey Senior America 2019 and wished her good luck in competing for the national title.

After the proclamation, Canale said a few words thanking the township, family and friends, who attended the meeting.

“I want to thank all my family and friends, everyone who is here tonight to support me. I didn’t get here alone, and I had an army to help me,” said Canale. “I’m going to go to nationals and bring the wow factor. I want people to gasp after I leave my talent routine, and I want them to remember this great state of New Jersey.”

In other news, later in the meeting during the manager’s report, Township Manager Kathy Burger addressed a memo from the chair of the town’s Economic Development Commission. One of the ideas in the memo talked about increasing the size of the EDC.

Burger suggested that at least one of the township committee members attend the EDC’s next meeting, held on July 11, to talk to more about their goals.

Watson added that getting 11 people, especially good people, could be a challenge but that it would be worth listening to if the EDC has a definite plan. The EDC currently has nine members, according to the town’s website.

The township moved the memo as a discussion item and stated it will take further action in the following meetings.

The next township committee meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 16 at 7 p.m. at the Public Safety Building.
