Mayor’s Message: Independence Day

This week we hear from Tabatha Scaffo from Wastewater Management.

As the holiday weekend soon approaches, we all should reflect back on the true meaning of the Fourth of July. It represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation. On July 4, the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, which had been written largely by Thomas Jefferson. Here’s a little independence history for you to ponder on.

Did you know that the vote for actual independence took place on July 2, from then on the fourth became the day that was celebrated as the birth of America’s independence. In 1776, our soldiers fought for our independence from Great Britain and just like today, they continue to fight all over the world to protect us.

Why did the US declare independence from Great Britain? The American colonies chose to proclaim independence from Great Britain for many reasons. They believed the British were treating the colonists unfairly. The British passed many tax laws that impacted the colonists. The colonists had no representatives in Parliament to vote on or discuss these laws.

Why was the Declaration of Independence written? The Declaration of Independence is an important part of American democracy because first it encloses the principles or objectives of our nation. Second, it encloses the complaints of the colonists against the British king. Third, it encloses the quarrels the colonists used to explain why they wanted to be free of British rule.

Whether you believe in war or not, still, be considerate of the brave men and woman who put their lives on the line and put in long days protecting and fighting for our freedom. The selfless sacrifices both the soldiers and their families provide, there are many ways you can show your appreciation this Fourth of July and year round, by sending “thank you” cards overseas or even to bases around the country and world. Sponsor a unit deployed and send care packages. Or simply just thank a soldier in uniform, you may not think it means anything to them, but it does. I became a Marine Mom in April when my daughter got married. My son-in-law is currently deployed overseas and he loves getting cards, letters and packages. He said it lets him know that we are thinking of him back home and the letters keep his mind busy. While it’s always a great weekend to get together with friends and family just remember and say a prayer for those we have lost, the veterans and those whose still serve.
