Summer Reading Program kicks off in Berlin Borough

The Marie Fleche Memorial Library hosted a magic show to kick off summer reading as school lets out

The school year is finally over for students across Berlin Borough. However, the Marie Fleche Memorial Library wants to make sure that education and learning, and most importantly literacy and reading, do not disappear as the summer begins.

On Tuesday, June 25 the library hosted its 2019 Summer Reading Blast Off to a packed house of young children ready to read this summer. The magic duo of “Digger and David” performed “A Gift from the Moon” to teach kids about space and the moon, going in line with the library’s 2019 theme of “A Universe of Stories.”

As children read themselves or are read to by a parent, they log each hour throughout the week. As the hours build up throughout the summer, they can submit them to the library for prizes drawn at the end of every week, as well as a grand prize to be drawn at the end of the summer program.

“There’s an hourly reading prize for all the children, as well as a chance to win a weekly reading prize that’s drawn from all those in the program,” said Betty Velie, who’s in charge of technology and publicity at Marie Fleche Memorial Library. “Then on Aug. 15, we have a grand prize drawing with all of the tickets from the entire summer, which is really significant.”

This summer, Marie Fleche Memorial Library has numerous special events going on for Berlin Borough residents and those who are library cardholders.

The library’s Make and Take Craft Center will be available at the library from June 24 to Aug. 9 during library hours. Those attending are recommended to check www.berlinborolibrary.org for more information prior to going to the library. Younger children may need assistance.

The library’s Tuesday Crafternoon, to be held on Tuesdays every other week from July 2 to Aug. 13, will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. for those ages 7 to 10. Registration is required for this event.

“Every week there is going to be something that’s a little bit different,” said Velie. “I really recommend that people check the website for the current craft, because the Make and Take Craft Center and Tuesday Crafternoon are going to vary.”

Additionally, the library is also hosting other events, such as The Universe of Sounds by Music Play Patrol on Wednesday, July 10 at 10:30 a.m., an animal show featuring Eyes of the Wild on Thursday, July 25 at 10:30 a.m., an event titled “The Sky’s the Limit” Thursday, Aug. 8 at 10:30 a.m., all leading up to the end of summer reading party with Joe Holiday’s Reading rocks Magic Show Thursday, Aug. 15, of which only summer reading program members will be able to attend.

Parents can find additional information about the summer reading program by visiting www.berlinborolibrary.org. Registration for the summer reading program, however, must be done at the library itself located at 49 South White Horse Pike in Berlin.
