Mt. Laurel Police warn residents of scams where the MLPD phone number and others are ‘spoofed’

Technology exists that enables scammers to manipulate the name and phone number displayed on the recipient's Caller ID display.

The Mt. Laurel Township Police Department is asking residents to be aware of phone scams in which callers impersonate police or other government officials by using technology that  enables scammers to manipulate the name and phone number displayed on the recipient’s Caller ID display.

According to police, these scammers might also be identified from their demand to be paid forms such as bitcoin and other lesser-known forms of payment.

If a resident should receive a suspicious call, it is recommended that they do not provide any sensitive personal information to the caller.

Instead, police said residents should contact the business or agency directly through a published phone number to determine if the call was legitimate.

And as noted, police said the MLPD will never call a residents to demand money or other forms of payment.
