Williamstown Sunrise Rotary sets date for annual golf tournament fundraiser

There’s an adage that goes, “The worst day of golf beats the best day of work.” While this statement rings true on its own, it goes double when the game of golf is for a good cause.

The Williamstown Sunrise Rotary is teaming up with the Glassboro Rotary to host its annual golf tournament on Thursday, Sept. 19 at Scotland Run Golf Club in Williamstown. Registration and networking start at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner and awards will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Registration for the tournament is $165 for a single golfer and $660 for a foursome, which includes the round of golf with a golf cart, a dinner buffet, and access to the putting and longest drive contests. Registration for the dinner only is $40. The deadline to register is September 5, registration can be done online at williamstown-sunrise-rotary.square.site or in person at a Rotary meeting.

Eli Berkowitz, secretary of the Williamstown Sunrise Rotary and member of the golf committee, believes this event is a great way for people to enjoy themselves.

“Everyone loves a good game of golf, and Scotland Run has one of the best courses in Gloucester County,” he said.

While the fundraiser is an easy way for folks to hit the links, it’s a great way to give back to the community. The money generated from the tournament will be given back in the form of scholarships for students, sending money to Rotary International and giving back to the community in other ways. Rotary members would not disclose how much the golf tournament has raised in years past.

Berkowitz described the Rotary as community-driven.

“We’re very involved in the food pantry. We built a playground that’s handicap accessible at Mary Duffy Park,” he said. “We go where we’re needed in the community.”

The portion of money that’s donated to Rotary International will go toward programs like the Polio Plus Program, an effort to eradicate polio. The polio virus, which causes paralysis, is only found in three countries today.

Attending the annual golf tournament not only allows for a day at the course but it feeds into one of Rotary’s pillars – “Service above self.” By coming out, the funds generated will directly affect the community and the world.

“It adds a lot of fellowship, brings people together,” Berkowtiz said of the tournament. “It helps expand the idea of what the Rotary is. We want you to help support Rotary, which in turn helps the local area.”
