Moorestown boys golf has had an excellent past two weeks. On May 14, the Quakers dominated the competition at the Central/South Group 3 sectional tournament, winning by 31 strokes over second place West Windsor-Plainsboro North. Senior Will Tone won the individual sectional crown after he shot a tournament-best 71.
“He played aggressive on the par fives and he ended up birdieing three of them,” Moorestown head coach Tim O’Reilly said about Tone’s key to success at sectionals. “He had the putter going. And he was smart with the way he played (the course). He was aggressive on the holes he needed to be aggressive on and he was cautious on the holes he needed to be cautious with.”
On Monday, the Quakers earned another trophy when they won the NJSIAA Group 3 state championship. Moorestown shot a 326 as a team to defeat second-place Chatham by 13 strokes. Ahkil Giri was the Quakers’ best golfer at states as he shot a 77 to lead the team. Giri’s score tied him for 11th out of more than 120 golfers in the tournament.
South Jersey had another golf state champion on Monday as Williamstown won the NJSIAA Group 4 state title. More on the Braves’ state championship later this week online and in the May 29 edition of South Jersey Sports Weekly.

Stories from Last Week
- Shawnee baseball needed to take down three of the best programs in South Jersey to bring home their first Diamond Classic title since 1990. The Renegades did just that, beating Haddonfield, 2-0, in the championship game.
- Haddonfield tennis coach Jeff Holman has won more than 2,280 matches, 68 sectional championships, 30 state titles and three Tournament of Champions titles during his long tenure with the boys and girls tennis programs. Yet these numbers only tell part of the story of Holman’s impact on the South Jersey high school tennis world.
- Williamstown’s McKenzie Melvin may only be a sophomore, but she is already taking aim at the softball program’s all-time hits record. Melvin talks about the mark, how she started playing softball and more in this week’s One-on-One.
- After dropping two matches in the season’s opening week, Washington Township boys volleyball has been nearly unstoppable. The Minutemen have won 23 games this season and can now call themselves Olympic Conference co-champions and Gloucester County champions after a couple of huge performances last week.
