Intoxicated driver arrested for causing head on motor vehicle collision

On Monday, May 6, at approximately 10:39 a.m. Gloucester Township Police were dispatched to the 2600 block of Garwood Road for a report of a motor vehicle crash involving a head on collision where both drivers were suffering from injuries.

Upon officer arrival Gloucester Township Fire Department and EMS were providing initial medical treatment to the drivers of the two involved vehicles.

Upon arrival of Virtua ALS it was determined that one of the drivers would be transported via medical helicopter to Cooper University Hospital due to the serious injuries sustained during the collision. That driver is now reported to be in stable condition.

As officers spoke with the second driver being treated by on scene medical personnel it was believed that she was driving her vehicle while intoxicated. She was taken into custody and transported by ambulance to Cooper Medical Center for treatment of serious, but not life threatening injuries.

This crash is being investigated by the Gloucester Township Police Department’s Serious Crash Investigation Team. The driver taken into custody was charged with Assault by Auto, Driving While Intoxicated and several additional traffic related offenses.

In accordance with bail reform procedures she was released pending a court hearing. Garwood Road was closed for approximately two and a half hours during the initial phase of this investigation. The name of the other driver involved who suffered injuries is being withheld pending notifications.
