Haddonfield’s Zone PTA is calling all budding school-aged borough artists to channel their inner patriot and submit artwork for consideration to be included in the 2019-20 version of the Haddonfield Community Calendar.
This year’s theme is honoring veterans, as the borough will also be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the American Legion, and its own Post 38 is joining in the commemoration.
The Legion was first chartered in 1919 by an act of Congress, and intended to serve as a patriotic, mutual-assistance wartime veterans association. In the intervening years, it has grown into a community-service organization that boasts almost 3 million members among 15,000 posts across the globe.
Per Post 38’s Facebook page, the National American Legion is divided into 55 separate departments: one for each state as well as individual ones for the District of Columbia, France, Puerto Rico, Mexico and the Philippines.
Of course, May is capped by country-wide observances of Memorial Day, which honor the ultimate sacrifice veterans have made for the United States throughout its history.
“The student artwork is a key feature of the community calendar, and both kids and parents enjoy seeing their work published in the calendar. Not only is it a great celebration of their creativity, but this year, it’s also a way for them to show appreciation for our servicemen and women,” said Jackie Tennyson, art chair for the Zone PTA.
All students throughout the Haddonfield School District, from kindergarten through 12th grade, are eligible to submit their work.
Those who wish to enter the contest will be able to submit their creations on the following subject matter:
- Gratitude and appreciation for our veterans’ sacrifice and service
- Patriotic imagery
- History of the American Legion/Post 38.
Deadline for all submissions is May 10. Barrett also confirmed that sponsorship mailers will be arriving to homes and businesses by mid-May.
According to the Haddonfield Civic Association website, the Haddonfield Community Calendar is a service project of Zone PTA, with assistance from the borough as well as the board of education. The calendar is expected to be mailed to homes and businesses throughout the borough in late August.
