On April 24, a Camden County jury found Timothy Canfield, 31, of Berlin Borough, guilty of Aggravated Manslaughter, three counts of Hindering Apprehension or Prosecution and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.
At the trial, Assistant Prosecutors Lauren Pratter and Brian Scanlon presented evidence and witness testimony that proved Timothy Canfield shot and killed Kereti Paulsen, 25, with a compound bow and arrow and then attempted to conceal his involvement in the homicide.
The incident occurred as Kereti Paulsen was walking away from North Brill Avenue in Berlin Borough after a verbal altercation with a group of people, including some of the residents of North Brill Avenue. Witnesses testified that after the verbal altercation, Canfield went into the residence and retrieved his compound bow and quiver containing several arrows.
Canfield went back outside the residence and shot the victim in the rear driveway of the residence. Evidence revealed that after the defendant shot Mr. Paulsen, he called 911 pretending to be the victim, provided false information to police about his involvement in the homicide, and concealed evidence by hiding the compound bow and arrows in a wooded area in Winslow Township. Timothy Canfield asserted a claim of self-defense at trial. Prosecutors presented evidence including expert testimony, which contradicted defendant’s claim. The jury rejected defendant’s claim finding defendant guilty of Aggravated Manslaughter.
Timothy Canfield is scheduled for sentencing on May 16, before the Hon. David Ragonese, J.S.C. He faces the possibility of a maximum sentence of 55 years in State prison.
