Andrew Gallagher and Stephen Oliva were two of the seniors from Seneca who presented to the BOE as a way to show many of the school’s achievements in the past year.

The students split the presentation into three categories: student accomplishments, school spirit and community service.

“The heart and soul of the Seneca family were expressed by Andrew Gallagher and Stephen Oliva at last night’s BOE meeting. Well done, gentlemen!,” said Superintendent Carol Birnbohm, via Twitter the following day.

Some of the accomplishments they highlighted were achievements that stood out from both  inside the classroom and on the field.

They featured the school’s clubs by reminding those at the meeting that two of the members, seniors Hannah Kent and Hannah Russo, were in Florida competing in the DECA national competition, and who also won first place in the state competition for the topic of Buying and Merchandising.

Students also mentioned the accomplishments outside of the classroom, where the field hockey team won the 2018 Central Jersey, Group 2 championship and finished as No. 16 in the state.

The boys soccer team had its most successful year in program history. The team went undefeated in the regular season with of 18 wins, capping off the season with a South Jersey, Group 3 sectional title.

The soccer team, after seeing. Birnbohm’s tweet of Gallagher and Oliva mentioning its accomplishments to the board members, also took to Twitter to express appreciation.

“Way to represent Seneca and our soccer family!!!” Tweeted the Seneca boys soccer team.

During the board meeting, when moving on to the category of school spirit, Oliva expressed the pride students have for the Green and Gold pep rally.

“It helps bring school unity and school spirit,” he said to the board.

Another school event Oliva was excited about was the Walk Under the Stars-A Relay for Life. He explained that students and faculty, along with an alumna who survived cancer, participated in an overnight walk to raise money for the American Cancer Society, ultimately raising over $16,000.

Everyone from students to the school’s groundskeepers participated in the event. It started after a Friday night football game and didn’t end until 6 a.m. Attendees created their own teams, dividing their time so that at least one person walked on the school’s track at all times.

“Seneca, this year, did something very special,” Oliva said about the walk.

The next board of education meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the Lenape District Administration Building in Shamong.
