The Deptford Township Board of Education re-assigned a longtime outdoor track coach prior to the start of the spring season.

Walter “Sonny” Anderson was named head girls outdoor track coach, Ahmad Rutherford was named assistant girls coach and DuJuane Collins was approved to be a volunteer coach for the high school. Collins was previously approved to be an assistant coach, however details were not revealed on why he was transferred to the volunteer position.

Board records show Anderson was the track coach for the spring 2018 season and indoor winter season this past year.

Coaches in Deptford are assigned to their positions on a stipend dependent on what season their respective sports are in.

Prior to the approval of Anderson’s position, board member James McDevitt III notified the board he had heard from families of athletes the girls outdoor track team lost approximately 15 athletes last spring.

Board member Stacy Gray inquired if it was a result of the coaches, to which McDevitt said he doesn’t know, and has “seen his credentials and he looks to be a fantastic coach.” McDevitt further clarified that parents said girls who were in the javelin, pole vault and shot put events had to also run due to a lack of runners on the team last year, which likely caused them to be exhausted.

He added he would “hate to be putting out that kind of money there if there wouldn’t be a team.” The coaches were assigned (excluding Collins) for a combined $10,760 stipend for the spring season. Chief Academic Officer Kevin Kanauss said both teams (boys and girls) have practices on March 1 and there were kids who signed up to do various track and field events.
