Parks & Rec. eyes summer programming early

The Department is already gearing up for the warmer months.

The Moorestown Department of Parks and Recreation offers many youth summer programs for 2019. For the first time, the summer parks program will group rising sixth to rising ninth graders together at the New Albany Recreation Center at Jeff Young Park. This decision was based on parent and staff input and allows for more children at Baker and Roberts Schools, which will now run programs for rising kindergartners to rising fifth graders. Overall this re-segmenting will alleviate waitlists, increase overall enrollment (age cap is now 14 years old) and allow for more age appropriate activities, including field trips. All summer programs will be off on July 4 and July 5 for the holiday.

“Four is Fun and Five is Fun’ner” programs will run Monday through Thursdays from 8:45 a.m. to noon at the South Valley Elementary School. It begins June 24 and ends July 25. Youngsters will be fully engaged in physical activities; learning letters and numbers; creating art and exploring experiments. Each week will be themed with corresponding art projects and stories. Special events include librarian Jen Dunne reading stories, a magician and “Let’s Bloom Together” where kids will decorate flower pots and plant flowers.

The “Summer Parks Program”for rising kindergarteners through rising fifth graders begins June 24 through July 26 on Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There are two locations: Mary C. Roberts School and George C. Baker School. This program is action-packed with games, art, kickball, water day, tournaments and the annual Fourth of July Celebrations. There are optional field trips available for an additional fee such as bowling at Pinsetters, Elite Rock Climbing and The Franklin Institute (on-site). For a listing of all field trips and to register go to www.moorestownrec.com/SummerParksFieldTrip.

The “Summer Parks Program” for rising sixth graders and rising ninth graders is also a Monday through Friday program beginning June 24 to July 26 and is from 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. The New Albany Recreation Center at Jeff Young Park offers a multitude of outdoor activities including volleyball, soccer, pickleball, tennis, basketball and softball. Optional field trips include: Eastern State Penitentiary, Elite Rock Climbing, a tour of the Battleship New Jersey and a canoe trip on the Rancocas River.

The “Summer Theatre” program for 2019 will be a production of “Seussical, Jr.” for children ages 7 to 13. “Auditions” are held only to determine role assignment, each child will be given a role. They begin Monday, June 24 or Tuesday, June 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Moorestown High School. Production begins June 26 through July 31. Theatre Camp is Monday through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. No prior theater experience necessary. This year we welcome new director, Melissa Manzano. She has a bachelor of arts in music and theater and is a certified teacher.

Summer Programs are for Moorestown residents only and require proof of age. Field trips may require additional fees. There will be an additional late registration fee of $20 after April 30. For full details and to register please visit www.moorestownrec.com.
