Snow Day: Deptford schools closed Wednesday

The forecast for Wednesday doesn’t look promising — unless you’re a fan of shoveling, sledding, or snow ball fights. It may start snowing at 9 a.m. and not wrap up until after 5 p.m.

With that in mind, the Deptford Township school district decided to be proactive. All schools in the township will be closed Wednesday, Feb. 20.

Here is what school district officials posted on their Facebook page late Tuesday night:

We’ve decided to err on the side of caution for the safety of our students and staff; calling only an early dismissal would have seen dismissal at Central and Pine Acres at 1:35 PM – two hours into the height of the storm.

Also, according to the district:

  • All district events on February 20th are cancelled – there will be no Spartan Care and no after school or evening activities.
  • Deptford Township School busses will not be in operation to any out-of-district school.
  • The middle and high school transition programs for 6th and 8th graders previously scheduled for February 20th will now take place on February 27th.

Earlier on Tuesday, the National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for interior South Jersey from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The area is expected to see heavy mixed precipitation, with possible snow accumulations of two to five inches as well as a light glaze of ice.

Drivers could encounter slippery road conditions throughout Wednesday. The storm could affect both the morning and evening commute. Residents are asked to continue monitoring the weather forecast for the latest updates on the storm.
