Rowan College at Burlington County to honor Black History Month with series of events

RCBC will celebrate Black History Month with music, food, fashion, movies and speakers in February.

Rowan College at Burlington County celebrates Black History Month with music, food, fashion, movies and speakers in February.

The college’s African American Cultural Committee organized a month-long series of events to engage the community in a celebration of culture and diversity and to honor the contributions of African Americans.

The following events are scheduled throughout February:

• On Friday, Feb. 1 there will be a movie screening of “Blackkklansman” at 7 p.m. in the Votta Hall Auditorium at the RCBC M.t Laurel Campus. Directed by filmmaker Spike Lee, “BlacKkKlansman” is a 2018 American biographical comedy-drama based on the 2014 memoir Black Klansman by Ron Stallworth. The film stars John David Washington as Ron Stallworth, along with Adam Driver, Laura Harrier, and Topher Grace. Stallworth, an African American police officer from Colorado Springs, Colo., takes on an undercover investigation of a lifetime. Along with his colleague Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), they successfully infiltrate and expose the local Ku Klux Klan branch. This event is free and open to the public.
• On Wednesday, Feb. 6 State Sen, Troy Singleton will speak at 6 p.m. in the Votta Hall Auditorium at the RCBC Mt. Laurel Campus. Singleton graduated with a degree in business administration and finance from Rowan University. He began his career as Legislative Director for New Jersey Assemblymen Herb Conaway and Jack Conners in the 7th Legislative District. He went on to become the Deputy Executive Director of the New Jersey General Assembly Majority Office and Chief of Staff under Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts, Jr. In 2011, he was elected to his first term in the New Jersey General Assembly, representing the 7th Legislative District. Elected to the New Jersey Senate in 2017, Troy now serves as Chairman of the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee, Vice Chairman of the Senate Economic Growth Committee, and as a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, and Judiciary Committee.
• On Wednesday, Feb. 13, the college will hold “Fashion Noir — A Cultural Explosion” at 6 p.m. in the Student Success Center at the RCBC Mt. Laurel Campus. This event will be hosted by RCBC’s Fashion Club in partnership with Atlantic City Fashion Week founders. This fashion show will feature designs by local and national African-American designers. This event is free and open to the public.
• On Sunday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m., the college will host its Soulful Lunch in the Culinary Arts Center at RCBC’s Mt. Holly Campus. Attendees can enjoy a cooking demo by Chef Tim Witcher, winner of the Food Network’s “Rewrapped,” “Let Them Eat Koffee Kake!” episode. Born and raised in South Jersey, Witcher has worked in various realms of the restaurant industry such as large hotel chains, sports arenas and most recently, in culinary education. After the demonstration, Chef James Brudnicki and RCBC Culinary Arts and Hospitality students prepare and serve a soul food-inspired lunch. Tickets are $15 per person. Tickets can be purchased at rcbc.edu/aacc in February.
• Finally, on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m., the college will host a Community Choir Sign-Off in the Votta Hall Auditorium at the RCBC Mt. Laurel Campus. Attendees can celebrate unity and African-American culture through song. This event will feature choirs from throughout Burlington County. This event is free and open to the public.
