Deptford Township High School senior Khi’on Smith, who has starred for the Spartans in both football and track, announced he is accepting a scholarship to continue to his football career at Shippensburg University.

Smith, a tailback on offense and a defensive back on defense, helped lead Deptford’s football team to its first winning season in 12 years this fall. He had over 1,000 combined yards from rushing and receiving and scored a total of eight touchdowns in 10 games during his senior season (five on the ground, one receiving, and two on special teams).

He also recently helped the Spartans winter track team to a championship in the Group 2 State Relay Championships (Jan. 18), where his relay shuttle team set the fastest mark in the country in the 2018-19 season.

Smith told The Sun he plans on majoring in criminal justice at Shippensburg. He announced his decision on Twitter after his latest round of college visits last week.

“I would like to thank God for giving me this opportunity to play the sport that I love at the next level,” Smith wrote in his tweet. “I would also like to thank my coaches for shaping me into the player and person I am today. In addition, I would like to thank my friends for the support they’ve given me over the years. Most importantly, I would like to thank my family for everything they have done for me since I was young. Without them, none of this would be possible. Without the love and support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Also I would like to thank all of the schools that have been recruiting me throughout this process.”
