At its Jan. 7 reorganization meeting, the Mantua Township Committee swore Shawn Layton and Robert Zimmerman back in to their seats as they won an uncontested election in November.

Both recited their oaths of office with state Senate President Steve Sweeney as they began their three-year terms. Layton was accompanied by his mother, Cindy, dad, Bob, and nephew, Robbin. Zimmerman was accompanied by his daughters, Brittany and Ashley, who serves on Mantua Township School District’s board of education.

The committee voted unanimously to re-appoint Pete Scirrotto and Zimmerman as mayor and deputy mayor, respectively. Scirrotto was accompanied by his wife, Marge, and recited his oath of office with Sweeney.

“This town didn’t do a whole lot until Pete and the other guys got here and changed the focus of the community,” said Sweeney. “Pete, I’m thrilled to be here and be a support of you and the committee as a whole. You guys work as a team and work with people in this town.”

Zimmerman thanked the township’s Democrat chair and co-chairs in helping him and Layton campaign and secure a win, despite the election being uncontested. He added he’s grateful for being able to work with the committee members and Scirrotto.

During his remarks, Layton noted how dedicated Scirrotto is to the township by cleaning up trash, on his own time, around town and encouraging others to do the same.

“Fair warning: Do not litter in Mantua,” said Layton. “If you do, he will look in the bag, find a receipt, track you down to where you bought the food, check the cameras and you will get a ticket.”

Committee members Eileen Lukens and John Legge congratulated the three men on their recent success. Lukens added there’s much to come for Mantua this year to make it “the best place to live.”

“I love our town,” said Scirrotto. “It’s the best town in the county. Best police force, and I’m blessed to sit up here with everyone.”

The next township committee meeting has not yet been confirmed.
