Longtime Haddonfield resident, Penn Vet professor, active community member dies on the feast of Stephen

Charles E. Benson, Ph.D., a longtime resident of Haddonfield, passed away on Dec. 26, at the age of 81. He was the husband of the late Gail Elizabeth (nee Smith), loving father of Deborah Elizabeth Quigley (Thomas) of Marlton and Charles N. Benson (Karen Lee) of Chicago, IL, treasured grandfather of Sean Quigley and Everett Benson, dear brother of Jon Benson (Teddi) of North Carolina and beloved uncle of numerous nieces and nephews.

Chuck was a Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine, as well as a former Chairman of New Bolton Center large animal hospital. He was a member of the Haddonfield Lions Club, the Haddonfield Rising Sun Masonic Lodge #15, a former Chairman of Haddonfield Friends of the Library, a longtime member of HUMC and later HFBC. Chuck was also very actively involved with Boy Scout Troop #3064.

Chuck’s family will receive friends on Saturday, Dec. 29 from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in the Sanctuary of the First Baptist Church, 124 E. Kings Highway, Haddonfield. His service will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will take place in New Carlisle, OH. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Chuck may be made to the church at the above address, where he was a longtime active member, or to Boy Scout Troop #3064, in care of the church at the above address.
