Year in Review: Eleven candidates file to run in 2018 Cherry Hill BOE election

The Sun’s informative piece on the 2018 board of education candidates would become the seventh most read story of 2018.

Editor’s Note: This is part of a countdown of the top 10 most read stories on www.cherryhillsun.com in 2018. This story was the seventh most read.

The seventh most read story on The Cherry Hill Sun’s website in 2018 was nothing more than an information piece listing the 2018 board of education election candidates. The story is one The Sun publishes in early August each year.

Unlike past years, however, this year’s story got a ton of attention has 11 candidates filed to run for just three seats.

The stage was set for what would become a widely discussed Cherry Hill Board of Education election. Incumbents J. Barry Dickinson, Kathy Judge and Ken Tomlinson Jr. filed to run for re-election and would end up running as a team, as this was the first year BOE candidates could be bracketed together on the ballot.

Opposing the incumbents were eight challengers. Sally Tong, Laurie Neary and David Rossi filed to run under the designation “Accountability, Collaboration, Transparency.” The trio would go on to win the election. Another trio, Sanjay Sharma, Brunia Pilet and Fredrick Dande, also ran together in the election. They ran under the designation “Kids Education First.” Two individuals who were not part of a team also opted to run: Benjamin Shore and Rosy Arroyo. Out of the eight challengers, six of them were running in their first board of education election.

All of The Sun’s Cherry Hill Board of Education election coverage ranked among some of the most widely read stories of the year. The Sun’s Meet the Candidates series finished just outside of the top 10 most read stories of the year. The Sun’s story recapping the election finished even higher on the list and will be examined closer as part of the Year in Review series later this week.
