Get a jump on winter basketball

Parks & Rec. is offering an array of winter basketball programs.

By: Amy Filippone, Dept. of Parks & Recreation

The Parks and Recreation Department’s Youth Soccer League had a late finish this year, ending Nov. 17 about three weeks past regular season. It was a very wet fall, especially on Saturdays. The first through third graders who played at Jeff Young Park and had the most matches (four) cancelled due to rain. So we’d like to thank the coaches for their patience and perseverance and to the parents and kids who bundled up and came out to watch and play in the cold, the mud, the rain and the wind.

Registration for Winter Youth Basketball has begun. It’s another great way to exercise and play on a team. It is open to all children, no experience required and everyone plays. Winter Basketball is a large program and more than 70 volunteer coaches are needed. The Parks and Recreation Department is always grateful for those who step up to mentor our youth. Co-coaching with a friend or spouse is a great solution for busy parents who’d like to participate more in their children’s athletics. Please consider taking on this rewarding role where you can see kids improve every week.

The basketball league for grade two (girls and boys play separately) begins Saturday, Jan. 12 through March 19 and will be played on lowered baskets at the Upper Elementary School. Teams will play for 90 minutes — the first 30 minutes will be a warm-up clinic run by Coach Ted Flick, followed by a 45-minute game. There are no weekday practices and teams will play between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Team assignments will be emailed by Jan. 4.

The basketball league for grades three through eight begins Saturday, Jan. 12 through March 9. Practices begin on Jan. 7. Teams will be assigned a one-hour weeknight practice per week based on coach’s availability.

See the department’s website for specific times for each grade level. Assignments will be emailed by January 5th. Team placement requests are not guaranteed.

The basketball league for high school boys will begin Jan. 13 through March 17. Games will be played at the Church Street Recreation Center between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Sundays. Teams will be drafted the week of Jan. 7.

Register at www.moorestownrec.com under Community Pass Winter 2018–2019 programs. Deadline: Friday, Dec. 14 at 4 p.m. For League Play only: No guarantee of placement after the deadline and a $10 late fee will be charged.
