Cherokee High School senior Blake Harney has been chosen to represent the United States of America at the International Olympiada of Spoken Russian in Moscow.

Harney is currently taking AP Russian Honors and is a member of the Cherokee High School Football Team.

The International Olympiada is a competition for over 200 high school-aged, nonnative Russian language learners from approximately 30 countries.

The U.S. delegates, a team of four students chosen from among hundreds of high school Russian language students across the country, participate in various competitions such as a Russian country and history examination, the recitation of a Russian poem and oral language tests.

The delegates also represent the United States in a country presentation, sharing information about American culture with other delegations.

All students engage in a rich program of cultural activities, performances, and sightseeing in Moscow.

The winners of this competition are invited to receive a full scholarship to a Russian University.

The goal of the event is to promote Russian language learning around the world.

Officials say Harney is the third Cherokee High School student to win a place on the U.S. Team. Former participants include Michael McShane in 2016 and Christopher Damerau in 2017.

The competition will take place in December.
