Piccola advocates for Democrats this election cycle.
During the 2016 election, there was a rallying cry, “Make America Great Again.” At face value, I can see why rational people would flock behind this banner. Unfortunately, the execution of such a lofty but ambiguous endeavor became something more akin to ‘Make America Change Again and Again and Again…’ Change is good. But as we know, when striving for change, many believe it is easier to tear down than build up. You can’t chip away at a foundation without adding back something of equal or greater support.
Our constitution lays out the very foundation of American values: justice, freedom, equality, democracy, compassion.
Even before he was elected, this president began laying a groundwork that would slowly empower his office to act outside of (and above) any interpretation of the constitution up until this point in history. Our president has gone so far as to declare he has the power to pardon anyone, including himself, of federal crimes. He said he has the power to nullify the constitutional right to citizenship for all those born in this country.
For two years, this self proclaimed untouchable president has dictated the final result of some of the most controversial legislation in history. Republican representatives in the supposedly independent Senate and House branches, have refused to vote against this president’s dictate. Not once, on any contentious issue of consequence, did a sitting republican defy the president.
In November, votes will be cast to decide 35 Senate seats. Also, every state has at least one Congressional seat on the ballot. Some states have five, ten, more than fifteen, congressional seats to fill.
Our republicans representatives have proven they will not act as the necessary and constitutionally mandated ‘check’ against the powers of the president. In this election, your vote for a democratic Congress and Senate will be the most important vote of your life. It is the most important vote of a generation.
Vote OUT those who continue to pander to the president’s every whim. Vote FOR democrats who will bring back a balance to presidential powers as mandated in the constitution.
