Suicide prevention, awareness walk this weekend

The Gloucester County Institute of Technology, in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and School Based Youth Services, is sponsoring the 10th annual Southern New Jersey Suicide Awareness and Prevention Walk this weekend.

The “Out of the Darkness” walk is set to take place on Sunday, Oct. 21 at GCIT’s campus at 1360 Tanyard Road in Sewell. The two-hour walk begins at 10 a.m., with check-in and registration starting at 8:30 a.m.

Participants that walk in the Out of the Darkness walks are joining the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

Each year more than 3,000 people die by suicide and everyday an average of 80 Americans will take their own life while 1,500 will attempt suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among the 15-24 age group.
