Mt. Laurel MUA retrofits Hartford Road Sewer Plant backup power generator engine to reduce pollution

Officials say nearly all components needed were custom made by MUA employees.

In an effort to reduce environmental pollution, employees of the Mt. Laurel MUA recently retrofitted the MUA’s Hartford Road Sewer Plant backup power generator engine with a crankcase ventilation conversion.

Officials say the generator engine at the wastewater treatment facility was originally designed with an open crankcase ventilation system.

According to officials, the objective of this conversion project was to convert the engine from having the crankcase vented into open atmosphere, where the oily mist was released, to a closed crankcase ventilation system.

The closed crankcase ventilation system collects the crankcase pressures and emissions, separates the oil, returns the oil to the oil pan and delivers the emissions and pressure to the intake side of the engine to be consumed by the combustion process.

Officials say all components of this system were custom made by MUA employees, from spare parts that were on hand, with the exception of the filtering unit.

According to officials, by utilizing employees skills and existing materials, the MUA saved approximately $3,500, with officials also pointing to the “bigger benefit” of preventing the pollutants from entering the environment.
