It is October and fall has arrived with spectacular weather. Although the temperatures are delightfully warm, this is not the time of year commonly known as Indian summer. That does not officially arrive until after the first frost, usually sometime in November.
Are you an aspiring young writer? As Halloween approaches, the Pinelands Library is sponsoring a Scary Story Contest. Young authors from each age group (8 to 12 and 13 to 18) can submit a story of not more than 500 words and a winner will be chosen at the end of the month to receive a prize. Select stories will be made available at the library for other patrons to take home and enjoy. Entries may be dropped off at the library or made by e-mailing submissions to PinelandsLibrary@gmail.com by Monday, Oct. 22. Be sure to include your name, age and phone number with your submission if you would like to be included in the contest.
Our annual Halloween Make-N-Take activity is available Monday, Oct. 29 through Wednesday, Oct. 31. Stop by the library to make a spooky, fun craft. Available while supplies last.
For those who enjoy classic horror movies, we offer a Bela Lugosi Triple feature on Halloween beginning at 5 p.m. Please note that this event may be too spooky for some of our younger guests.
Reminding anyone and everyone in the family, stop in the Pinelands Library every Saturday in October to pick up a clue sheet for the Main Street Scavenger Hunt. The clues will lead you to participating businesses giving stickers to complete your hunt. Return your sheet to the to the library to be entered in the raffle to win a prize basket. The scavenger hunt will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday.
Also, on Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. teens and families will be fascinated as Jeff Ryan discusses his new book “A Mouse Divided,” a fascinating behind the scenes look at the early days of the Walt Disney Company and how Mr. Ub Iwerks helped shape the House of Mouse. Ryan will have animations, anecdotes and will be available to sign his work after the program.
Adults and seniors will enjoy creating unique artwork on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m. Pages from old books will be used to create an original poem. All supplies will be provided for this “Blackout Poetry” craft.
