Obituary: Alan L. Gant

Former Haddonfield High School teacher, lover of sports died Sept. 28.

Gant passed away at age 93 on Friday, Sept. 28. For 60 years, he was the beloved husband of the late Mary Ann (nee Quinn). He was a dear and devoted father to his children Richard, Debra and Barbara Kinner (Gregory). He had four step-grandchildren and eight step-great grandchildren.

He proudly served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Japan. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Trenton State Teacher’s College, where he also met his wife. He was an offensive tackle and co-caption of Trenton’s championship football team in 1950 and co-captain of their basketball team. He began his teaching career at Salem High School and spent the next 34 years at Haddonfield Memorial High School, teaching both physical education and driver’s education.

Gant went on to receive his Masters of Education from Rutgers University and became a guidance counselor. He is remembered fondly for his days as a varsity basketball coach, varsity cross-country coach and a track official in Camden County.

Gant was a long time resident of both Westmont, NJ and Shamong, NJ. He spent his remaining years at Collingswood Manor. He loved to golf, travel with his wife, and closely followed the activities of his children. He was a big fan of Philadelphia pro-sports teams, Big Five basketball, and PGA golf. He will be remembered as a sweet, kind and humble man with a witty sense of humor.

Mr. Gant’s family will receive visitors on Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Kain Murphy Funeral Home in Haddonfield where a service will follow. Interment will take place at Colestown Cemetery in Cherry Hill, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations to UMC-Collingswood, memo Employee Holiday Fund, 460 Haddon Ave., Collingswood, NJ 08108.
