All veterans are invited to attend a free musical performance by Al’s ChorAl at the Vineland Veterans Home starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16. The Vineland Veterans Home is located at 524 North West Boulevard in Vineland.
Al’s ChorAl is an interfaith, senior singing group founded in memory of Rabbi Albert L. Lewis, long-time, beloved and distinguished rabbi at Temple Beth Sholom, by his daughter, Gilah Lewis Sietz, who wanted to honor him and his love of music. Rabbi Lewis died in 2008 at age 90. His first 45 years as a rabbi were at the temple when it was located in Haddon Heights. When it moved to its current location in Cherry Hill, he remained rabbi there for another five years until his retirement, followed by a 15-year term as rabbi emeritus.
Sietz, of Cherry Hill, said she created the choir in 2012 “to continue my father’s legacy in the community while honoring three components dear to his heart: love of music, love of humanity, and the perpetuation of the interfaith connection that he worked so hard to establish in 1948.” She noted that the programs performed by Al’s ChorAl “run the gamut of musical genres”.
May Brill of Cherry Hill, honorary commander of the Jewish War Veterans Post 126 of Cherry Hill and chair of the home’s recreational activities and programs for veterans and their spouses who live there, said the performance will be followed by refreshments and socializing with the residents and visiting veterans by members of the chorale.
Brill, herself a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, said Post 126 is also planning a bingo party for the home’s residents and will support a new bowling team there when it holds tournaments at its in-house bowling alley. She added that the post’s endeavors for the veterans and their spouses are supported by the sale of poppies made by veterans and she expressed her gratitude to the community for purchasing the poppies whenever they’re offered for sale.
Al’s ChorAl, which currently includes about 35 members and is open to all, meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays at Temple Beth Sholom. More information and the 2018 rehearsal schedule is available at www.alschoral.org.
