Release issued by Gloucester Township
The Gloucester Township Community Garden is in full bloom this July and gardeners are enjoying fresh fruits and vegetables right off the vine. The community garden is located on William F. Schuck Lane at the end of Floodgate Road in Glendora, opposite the Gabreil Daveis Tavern.
The gardeners have access to compost, woodchips and water. The garden holds a common herb garden and a common raspberry patch along with 23 plots available for residents to sow. Twenty three plots are available and assigned on a first come basis early spring.
Community gardens allow families and individuals without land of their own the opportunity to produce food, and provide a place for gardeners to share knowledge and skills. Multiple studies have shown that natural areas such as community gardens grant a variety of mental health benefits.
Being in natural places fosters recovery from mental fatigue, improves outlook and life satisfaction, helps us to cope with and recover from stress, improves our ability to recover from illness and injury, restores concentration and improves productivity.
Simply viewing plants has been shown to reduce fear, anger, blood pressure and muscle tension. Besides being a great way to exercise, gardening motivates people to stay active longer than other activities. So if your goal is to get more healthy, spend more time outdoors and enjoy a couple of new friends — do not miss the opportunity to sign up for a plot come Spring 2019.
