Construction on Grove Street Bridge pushed back to Thursday

Weather has delayed the work, which will cause detours in the area

Camden County officials said heavy rains and wind gusts this week have delayed the start of structural work on two bridges that pass over the Cooper River, including the Grove Street Bridge, which connects Haddonfield and Cherry Hill.

The Camden County Department of Public Works anticipates to begin construction on the both the Grove Street and Cuthbert Boulevard bridges on Thursday, July 26, according to a news release. Detours will be in place to facilitate construction, and the exact timing and completion of the projects may be altered by weather and other factors, the county said.

“Based on structural conditions of both spans it was imperative we get this begin this work as soon as possible,” Freeholder Susan Shin Angulo said in a statement.

Due to the location of the repairs, traffic on Grove Street will not be permitted to travel northbound over the bridge from Haddonfield toward Route 70. A detour will be implemented at Kings Highway and take traffic around the work zone on Park Boulevard, according to the county.

Southbound traffic on Grove Street from Route 70 toward Haddonfield will not be affected, county officials said.

During peak travel times, local police departments will manually control traffic signals for the one-way detour at the intersections of Kings Highway and Park Boulevard and Park Boulevard and Grove Street to mitigate delays, according to the release.

The other project will affect the Cuthbert Boulevard Bridge in Haddon Township. Crews will maintain a single lane of traffic over the bridge in both directions during construction, the county said.

The projects, which cost a total of $1 million, are being funded by the state Department of Transportation Local Bridge Future Needs fund and will include various measures to strengthen the weakened beams of the bridges, according to the release.
