Letter to the editor: Resident concerned over sign at July 4 parade

Mary C. Kirk, of Haddonfield, writes that Fourth of July parade is not a time for unwelcoming signs

To the Editor:

First, thank you for your coverage of our town; I love living here and enjoy reading about our many activities.

Because of a summer virus, my husband and I missed our Haddonfield Fourth of July parade and the pleasure of seeing our two little granddaughters in the parade with their decorated scooters. I was happy to hear that they loved being in the parade. I was disappointed, however, when I heard of a large sign carried in the parade. The sign claimed that there may be people who don’t like Haddonfield, but they “didn’t care, do you?” Of course, people are welcome to express opinions, but it saddened me that adults would project, to me, a negative attitude. It seemed a most unwelcoming sign, especially to visitors to our town on a day we are celebrating our appreciation of our country’s independence.
