Washington Township Police announce Police Home Security Camera Registration Initiative

Press release from Washington Township Police Department

Washington Township Police Home Security Camera Registration Initiative:

Crime prevention is a cooperative effort between those we serve and our agency. One of Chief Gurcsik’s initiatives is the concept of Community Care-Taking. In furtherance of this process the Washington Twp. Police Department is requesting residents, businesses and organizations that have security cameras in place on their property to complete a short registration form. The registration will not give the police access to your camera system but allows our agency to maintain a database of active cameras in the event a crime occurs in the area.

If a burglary occurs in a certain neighborhood we would know that cameras may have captured an image of a vehicle or suspect that could help detectives connect us to suspects involved. A detective would phone you and ask to review footage. Participating properties will receive a decal with the official Washing Twp. Police Safe Cam logo to display as an additional deterrent to crime.

Chief Gurcsik stated “Eyewitness testimony has always played an important role in solving crimes and is heavily relied upon by our detectives. In 2018 video surveillance technology is better than ever and becoming more and more affordable. There is no doubt that video surveillance systems play an important role in solving crime. Video surveillance systems serve as the backbone of criminal cases and is the one unbiased witness to events.”

“Our Detective Bureau has one of the highest crime clearance rates in Gloucester County and we hope to expand on that by creating another tool to help solve crime.”
