Moorestown’s Department of Parks and Recreation is offering an array of activities this summer.

  • Chillin’ at the Rec!:

Starting June 25, the department’s summer recreation hours have begun. Monday through Friday from 1:30 to 4 p.m. fourth through eighth graders will have open gym time. As an added bonus on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays the 3rd Floor will be open for some chill fun. Enjoy playing foosball, air hockey, ping pong and pool or relax on the couches, have a snack and play a game with friends. It’s a treat to get out of the heat and kick back on the beautiful third floor.

Summer Open Gym for older kids in grades nine through 23-years-old will be Monday through Fridays from 4 to 6 p.m. Open Gym is free to residents, just sign up at the desk and shoot some hoops. Healthy snacks are available to keep your tank full.

There are still some spots open in some of our wonderful summer youth camps, so don’t delay and sign up now at www.moorestownrec.com.

  • Five-Day Summer Sports Clinics:

These clinic will take place on Monday through Friday on Aug. 13 through Aug. 17 for ages 5 to 7 and Aug. 20 through Aug. 24 for ages 8 to 12. Both clinics are from 9 a.m. to noon.

This is a great opportunity for children to sample a variety of sports and see which suits them best. There are also commonalities across sports that will help improve a child’s performance in any sport. Camp will be held at Jeff Young Park where kids will learn the fundamentals of soccer, basketball, tennis and flag football.

  • Volleyball Camp:

This camp will take on Monday through Thursday on July 16 through July 19. This camp is open to students in grades five through eight, and the camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon.

The camp will stress fundamentals including passing, serving, setting and basic hitting. This program will be held at Moorestown Recreation Center and is open to boys and girls in grades five through eight.

  • Space Robot Workshop:

This workshop runs from July 23 through July 26 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Students will build a space station, a moving astronaut and more all powered by solar and light energy. Kids will learn about space and how robots are currently employed to explore Mars. The focus will be on the future of space travel, alternative energy sources and robots traveling to the outer reaches of space.

  • Catapults and Crossbows:

This workshop will take place from Aug. 20 to Aug. 23 from 9 a.m. to noon. Children will learn how projectiles work, the mechanics of force and how a change in design impacts range of motion and the distance an object travels. Mechanical, motorized, medieval type of catapults will be built to demonstrate the physics of distance and motion.

  • Summer Art Camp:

This camp will take place from Aug. 6 to Aug. 10 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Artist in residence, Sophia Geiger, will be taking kids on an intergalactic voyage. This year’s sci-fi theme will have children creating all things to do with outer space — aliens, rockets, astronauts and robots.

Baking and learning how to bake is often referred to as the “chemistry of cooking.” Accurately measuring is most critical in baking, more so than in any other culinary discipline. Students will learn the foundations of baking and the importance of measurements, ratios and proportions. Chef Katie Sklarow will be teaching how to make cakes, pretzels and a class choice, all from scratch.

  • Four-Day Culinary Camp:

This camp will take place from Aug. 13 through Aug. 16 for grades five through eight. The camp will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Chef Katie will take the children on a tour through “American Cuisine” favorites. All recipes will use quality, sustainable ingredients and be prepared completely from scratch. Children will return home with food and recipes to share with their families. Learn to master,“Soul Food,” “Tex Mex,” “Italian-American” and “Asian Delights.” A delicious melting pot!
