Obituary: Laura Woomer Farr

Laura Woomer Farr of Medford, formerly of Haddonfield, passed away in her sleep at age 98 on June 13 in Samaritan Hospice in Mount Holly.

Laura Woomer Farr of Medford, formerly of Haddonfield passed away in her sleep at age 98 on June 13 in Samaritan Hospice in Mount Holly. Laura was born on New Year’s Day 1920 in Hershey, PA to Isabelle Buchanan Woomer and Robert Woomer. She was the youngest of three sisters, Alice being the oldest and Frances being the middle child. Having lost both parents at a relatively young age, she put herself through the Presbyterian School of Nursing in Philadelphia. She married Anthony J. Marasco in 1941, a marriage that lasted until his death in 1958. As an RN, she worked as a visiting nurse in Philadelphia based out of Cooper Hospital in Camden, NJ.

She retired from nursing in 1962 when she married William R. Farr, which lasted until his passing in 2006. She was very active in Quakerism from the late 1960’s until recent years. As a member of Haddonfield Friends Meeting in New Jersey, she was chair of the Prison Service Committee and headed up the Friendly Visitors, a group of volunteers who provided counseling in maximum security prisons.

Upon entering the independent living phase of Medford Leas retirement community, Laura transferred her membership to Mount Holly Friends Meeting in New Jersey, where she remained a member until her passing.

Laura is survived by sons Richard, Robert and William Jr. (Joe), her niece Lyn, her nephews Robert and William, and her grandchildren Katie, Nicholas, Kelly, Alana, Georgia, Abe and one great-grandchild, Arthur.

Family and friends are invited to Mrs. Farr’s Memorial Service on Saturday, June 23 at 1 p.m. at Haddonfield Friends Meeting, 45 Friends Ave., Haddonfield NJ 08033. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Farr’s honor to Mount Holly Friends Meeting (81 High St, Mt Holly, NJ 08060), the American Friends Service Committee (1501 Cherry St, Philadelphia, PA 19102), or the Nature Conservancy (www.nature.org).
