Haddonfield teacher awarded with James Madison Fellowship

Two days after Meghan McCormick’s birthday, life handed her an unexpected present. The Haddonfield Memorial High School American history teacher was awarded the James Madison Fellowship, a surprise she never saw coming. “I was so convinced that I hadn’t gotten it,” McCormick said. “It wasn’t real until I got home.” Having only been a teacher for two years at HMHS, McCormick was shocked but thrilled to be awarded the James Madison Fellowship, a scholarship designed to support the further study of American history by college graduates who aspire to become or are teachers of American history, according to the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation.

Haddonfield student finds ways to raise awareness

Tatem Elementary student Maria Keegan doesn’t spend her free time like many typical fifth graders. She can often be found creating folders that are disseminated to team captains during the Walk to End Alzheimer’s or passing out fliers among other acts of volunteerism. “It makes me feel like I am helping even though I can’t take away Alzheimer’s. … I can at least try to change what people know about it,” Maria said. Every year, Keegan volunteers at various events in and around South Jersey to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease, the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.
