The department issued close to 200 summonses during the crackdown.
Gloucester Township Police officers participated in the nationwide 2018 “Click It or Ticket” campaign that occurred May 21 to June 3.
This annual campaign focuses on unbuckled motorist and their passengers and incorporates zero-tolerance enforcement of safety belt laws.
The Gloucester Township Police Department received a $5,500 grant from the State of New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety. As part of the grant initiative, officers conducted high visibility patrols along the townships roadways, targeting vehicle occupants who were not wearing seatbelts.
“Using a seat belt is the simplest way for a driver and his or her passengers to protect themselves while traveling,” said Gary Poedubicky, Acting Director of the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, “In 2016 it is estimated that more than 14,500 lives were saved nationally by the proper use of seatbelts.”
During this year’s “Click it or Ticket” campaign, the GTPD issued 126 summonses for failure to wear a seatbelt, three summonses for children not being properly secured in a car seat, and 64 summons for driving with a suspended license.
Additionally, during this time period, a total of two drivers were arrested for DWI and one driver was arrested for possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
