The baking and culinary camps will be held in the Commercial Kitchen on the 3rd floor of the Church Street Recreation Center. Chef Katie Sklarow, a 2009 Moorestown High School graduate with a degree in Culinary Management from the Art Institute of Philadelphia, will be inspiring young chefs. Sklarow is an advocate of using locally sourced ingredients when available. She is active in her local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and will be sharing the bounty of the season.

Four-Day Baking Camps will take lace in June, July and August on Monday through Thursday on the following dates:

  • June 25–28 (1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.) — Grades 2–5
  • July 16–19 (9:00 a.m. to noon) — Grades 5–8
  • August 13–16 (9:00 a.m. to noon) — Grades 2–5
  • August 20–23 (1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.) — Grades 4–8

Baking and learning how to bake is often referred to as the “chemistry of cooking.” Accurately measuring is most critical in baking, moreso than in any other culinary discipline. Students will learn the foundations of baking and the importance of measurements, ratios and proportions. Chef Katie Sklarow will be teaching how to make cakes, pretzels, scones, pies and classic European Desserts, all from scratch.

Four-Day Culinary Camps will take place in June, July and August on Monday through Thursday on the following dates:

  • June 25–28 (9 a.m to noon) — Grades 5–8
  • July 16–19 (1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.) — Grades 4–8
  • August 13–16 (1 p.m. to 4 p.m.) — Grades 5–8
  • August 20–23 (9 a.m. to noon) — Grades 3–6

Chef Katie will take the children on a tour through “American Cuisine” and “Travel Around the World” favorites. All recipes will use quality, sustainable ingredients and be prepared completely from scratch. Children will return home with food and recipes to share with their families.

Five-Day Summer Sports Clinics will take place on Monday through Friday on the following dates:

  • August 13–17 for ages five to seven from 9 a.m. to noon
  • August 20–24 for ages eight to twelve from 9 a.m. to noon

This is a great opportunity for children to sample a variety of sports and see which suits them best. There are also commonalities across sports that will help improve a child’s performance in any sport. The camp will be held at Jeff Young Park where kids will learn the fundamentals of soccer, basketball, tennis and flag football. Participants will learn stretching techniques and drills developed to improve their skills. Rachel Emerson, Assistant Coach at Rowan University for Women’s Lacrosse, will be leading kids through small group instruction. Children will also have the opportunity to work with mentors and participate in live games.

Four-Day Volleyball Camp will take place on Monday through Thursday from July 16 through July 19.

This program will be held at the Moorestown Recreation Center from 9 a.m. to noon and is open to boys and girls in grades five through eight. The camp will stress fundamentals including passing, serving, setting and basic hitting. There will be scrimmage games to test out newly acquired skills. John Grossman will be instructing.

Five-Day Art Camp will take place from Aug. 6 through Aug. 10 for kindergartners through fifth graders.

Artist in residence, Sophia Geiger, will be taking the kids on an intergalactic voyage. This year’s theme is sci-fi with spaceships, robots, aliens and rockets. Sophia has been teaching for the Moorestown Parks and Recreation Department for more than 11 years.
