Jaggard Elementary School students enjoy annual literacy night with animal theme

This year’s “Paws for Books” theme incorporated students’ love for animals and reading into a night filled with literacy activities.

Jaggard Elementary School recently hosted its annual Literacy Night event for students and their parents.

The theme of this year’s event was “Paws for Books” and incorporated the students’ love for animals and reading into a night filled with literacy activities.

“This is the fourth Literacy Night at Jaggard that I have participated in and I am always impressed by the number of teachers and staff members who volunteer each year to help,” Jaggard Principal Maria Sobel said. We had 50-plus staff members donate their time this year. Due to their efforts everyone who attended had a ‘Pawsitively’ awesome time.”

The entire building was decorated with hand-made crafts, which embodied the animal theme and were created by the Jaggard PTA and staff. In addition to the annual book fair held in the library, the event offered a variety of literacy-related stations, including Woof Woof Word Work, Cat Nap Corner, Tech Tails, Paws in the Park and Mission Impawssible, which was an obstacle course set up for participants in the school’s gymnasium.

David Sammaritano, a third-grader at Jaggard Elementary School, posed with Pete the Cat at the school’s recent Literacy Night.

David Sammaritano, a third-grader at Jaggard, brought his father to Literacy Night and was excited to partake in the different activities.

“I had a lot of fun at the Woof Woof Word Work station. I’m also excited to stop by the book fair and get a new book to start reading,” David said.

The night kicked off with a DJ dance party in the gymnasium before students were divided into their groups.

Afterwards, they began to explore the different stations set up throughout the building. Parents were able to follow their children to each station and participate in group activities.
