Letter to the Editor: Soaring gas prices are unacceptable

A letter by Charles Lafferty

Here we go again!

Gas prices have been slowly rising the last year. But lately, they are skyrocketing just in time for the summer fun and the holidays. I guess they forgot about five years ago when people slowed down taking trips which hurt the shore towns and the Poconos.

It’s time to make sacrifices again by not doing the things we love and staying closer to home. My wife and I can take trips and pay the unreasonable fuel prices but there are a lot of people who struggle just to put fuel in their cars to get to work.

I recently read that here in New Jersey, the Cape May Ferry will be charging an extra $1 per car as a fuel surcharge starting June 1. This is directly related to the rise in fuel prices.

Also, to compensate for the higher fuel prices, you know that everything will go up in price especially at the supermarket. We can now pay more to get to the grocery store in order to pay higher food costs. This is unacceptable!

Let’s rally again and show these big corporations that we are not going to just let them charge as much as they want. If one day a week, everyone stopped buying fuel, this would send a strong message that they could not ignore. We need a lot of people to make this work. We should be united as a nation!

Let’s hit the fuel companies where it hurts — at their bottom line!
