It certainly was a winter we’d all like to put behind us and to finally get the chance to embrace some warm, sunny weather, so join the Moorestown Parks & Recreation Department to welcome in summer with some patriotic and fun community events.

Start off with Moorestown’s 32nd annual Memorial Day Ceremonies on Monday, May 28 at Memorial Field located at 254 South Church Street. The ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. with a musical prelude by the Moorestown High School Band. They will also be performing the National Anthem and Taps over the course of the ceremonies. Boy Scout Troup #44 will carry out the Posting of Colors followed by Cub Scouts #44 leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Commander Robert J. Flynn of the United States Navy — Blue Angels will be the main speaker, and the Second Baptist Church Choir will also perform. The Memorial Day holiday is more than barbecues with friends and family. This moving ceremony honors the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Services reminds us to be humble and grateful.

On Saturday, June 2, come visit the Parks & Recreation’s booth at the 42nd Annual Moorestown Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. We’ll have lots of information on summer camps, concerts, sports and more. They’ll be giveaways, and you’ll have the opportunity to have all your questions answered and to learn about all that the Parks and Recreation Department has to offer — there’s something for everyone — kids, teens, seniors, walkers, performers and athletes of all ages.

The following day, Sunday, June 3, from 1 to 3 p.m., there will be a Teen Clean Program for any Moorestown high school student (public or private) to earn service hours and to help beautify the town. The locations are: Main Street (post Moorestown Day), Jeff Young Park (Moorestown Rotary Club will be helping at this location), Wesley Bishop Park and Fullerton Park. Students will help with various tasks: trash pick up, mulch spreading, weeding and plantings. It’s a great way to spruce up Main Street and to contribute to the upkeep of parks we all love and rely on for sports and recreation. Students should arrive at the park chosen except for the Main Street location, which will meet in the parking lot behind LaVita’s to begin. To sign up and choose a location, visit www.moorestownrec.com or call (856)914–3093.

And the fun continues with the first of Moorestown Parks & Recreation Summer Concert Series in collaboration with Moorestown Community House, Perkins Center for the Arts and MoorArts, on Monday, June 4. The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. on the lawn of Perkins Center and will feature the Perkins Center for the Arts House Band, “Vinyl Comes Alive.” They will perform some of the greatest songs from the Motown (that’s Detroit) era as well as artists and bands that populated the Stax and Atlantic Records sound featuring artists Wilson Picket, Otis Reading and Charles Bradley, the “screaming eagle of soul” — perfect for this Motown.
