Gloucester County set to receive nearly $2 million

On May 7, United States Congressman Donald Norcross announced South Jersey communities will receive $12,833,718 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide affordable housing and assistance services, improving security for residents and helping local economies thrive.
“Everyone deserves an affordable, safe place to call home,” Norcross said. He added“These funds will go a long way to change lives and help transform neighborhoods in South Jersey, and I’m proud to have supported this funding in my district. From combatting homelessness to assisting those who are ill, these investments will provide opportunities that may never have existed otherwise.”
The HUD grants include $4.4 for the city of Camden, $3.7 million for Camden County, $2.3 million for Burlington County and $2 million for Gloucester County.
Five types of grants were awarded:
- Community Development Block Grants, which provide funding for the development of viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate-income persons.
- Emergency Solutions Grants, which provide funding to engage homeless individuals and families living on the street; improve the number, quality and operations of emergency shelters for homeless individuals and families; provide essential services to shelter residents, rapidly re-house homeless individuals and families, and prevent families/individuals from becoming homeless.
- The HOME program grants, which help to expand the supply of decent, affordable housing to low- and very low-income families.
- The Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS program grants, which provide housing assistance and related supportive services for projects that benefit low-income persons medically diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and their families.
- The Housing Trust Fund, which is a new affordable housing production program to increase and preserve the supply of decent, safe, and sanitary affordable housing for extremely low- and very low-income households, including homeless families.
Gloucester County will receive $2 million:
- Community Development Block Grant: $1,200,642
- The HOME program: $626,323
The City of Camden will receive $4.4 million; Camden County will receive $3.7 million; Burlington County will receive $2.3 million; Cherry Hill will receive a $438,205 Community Development Block Grant; Gloucester Township will receive a $289,364 Community Development Block Grant.
